Must think positive. Must think positive.

Had a nightmare of a placement day today. Got to watch non-violent crisis intervention (something they don't teach us, how helpful) IN ACTION. Meaning, my supervisor holding this girl in a reverse-bear hug as the kid attempted to bite, scratch, kick, punch, and pinch, SCREAMING and CACKLING the whole time. Mixed in with her usual random convulsions (it's like she's having tiny seizures all day long). It was downright scary. She tried to throw a (hard) toy RIGHT at my super's head, and only JUST missed.

I had to admit (despite being expected to impress my super) that I don't feel like I can handle that kind of situation... She gave advice, but HOLY SHIT. That is WAY beyond a tantrum.

This girl was beating *herself* up (as in SLAPPING herself, whacking her arms and legs, and CURSING at herself). It was twisted. Can you imagine what it must be like to try to raise a kid like that, where the emotional-cognitive development is soooooooo messed up?? I feel overwhelmed, under-prepared, inadequate and frankly, freaked out. What the heck would I do if I were given a kid like that on my caseload???

Wow, that sounds tough Megs. Hang in there and whatever situation arises just do your best. You're feeling overwhelmed because you haven't had to deal with situations like that. Once you get more experience you'll be able to handle everything much better. Don't worry, it's normal to feel overwhelmed.

Any special plans for your birthday?
